This word originally meant something not published. It has two
distinct meanings. The primary
one is something
not published, in which sense it
has been used to denote
either secret history,
history of Justians court or portion of
ancient writers which have remained long in manuscripts and are edited
for the first
time. Of such anecdote there are many collections.
In the general
acceptations of the
word anecdotes are short
accounts of detached interesting
particulars. Of such anecdotes the collections are almost infinite. A more recently collection is the
Literary Anecdotes of the 19-th century
edited by W. R.
Nicole and T.S. Wise.
